Mary’s Mom
Encaustic with Cold Wax.
9 x 12”. 2019
Otty created a series of 6 encaustic paintings that were based on her favorite Mary Cassatt paintings. Encaustic paintings, made with hot wax were mounted on cradled panels and these created original backgrounds for each painting. The central image is a print of a Cassatt painting, which was embedded in the hot wax, distorted and embellished to make the subject original to the artist’s work. Then cold wax was applied as a final layer for a delicate matte finish with deckled edges. In some cases, gold foil was used, as in this case (the necklace) for highlight.
